Future Success begins at a Young Age

By , May 24, 2010

As a young girl shortly after I had outgrown Barbie’s and stuffed animals I was playing business woman at my built in desk just steps from our kitchen sink.  I imagined it was my corner office with surrounding windows and our dining room table was the board room.  I would play “business woman” for hours pretending to take phone calls from important clients and running strategic meetings of business as I stood at the head of the table saying what our next fascinating move for the company would be.

This is not far from what my life has become all these years later.  Now at the age of 33 with 5 young children and a growing business… I feel my life has become just as I imagined it.  Times were not always easy yet I have faced the obstacles in my life and each day is filled with learning opportunities.

One of the learning lessons I will share about today is regarding engaging my family in the business.  There was a time that I was so focused on starting my company that I lost sight of sharing my life with my family.  I thought it was so clear to all that I was building the business for those near and dear to me so that we could eventually enjoy all of the benefits that come from being a success.  Wow was that a wakeup call.

Today one of the ways that I engage my family is by simply speaking with them about our company.  We share conversation about our family business, how we can celebrate our successes, and what we can each contribute that will help make our dreams come true.

If you would like to create a “Family Business”…
Today my suggestion is to request a conversation with your family so everyone can share how they currently feel about the business.  By nature, a defensive feeling may arise, be sure you are ready to hear the Good, the Great, and the Ugly with an open mind and appreciation.  Once there is understanding and clarity – you will all begin to see how you can work in harmony and enjoy quality time together, the fruits of your labors, and the benefits of creating a family business.

Just as I had imagined my life as a young child, I am living the life of my dreams, surrounded by people I love, passionately working my business each day knowing we are making a difference, and grateful for the moments I have with the people who are dear to me.  Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your life story.
